As part of an after-school program, the kids at Malcolm X Academy get to select from a range of activities. The art class is one of the activities. Usually 20-25 kids attend the weekly session. The Shipyard artist prepares a project; sometimes the project will continue for two or three sessions. Recently the kids used a mirror to draw a self-portrait. The drawn self-portrait was then interpreted and painted with water-color onto an 8” x 10” canvas. The project is now an exhibit at the Auditorium in Building 101 at the Hunters Point Shipyard Complex. The exhibit will hang during a visit by a touring group from the Americans for the Arts in June 2016.
