A VITAL BRIDGE TO OUR COMMUNITY

Kristine Mays, Artist in Residence 2012-13

Kristine Mays, Artist in Residence 2012-13

The Artist in Residence Program was one of the earliest initiatives undertaken by the Shipyard Trust for the Arts (STAR) after its formation in 1995. Building a strong bridge between the Shipyard Trust for the Arts (STAR) and the Bayview Hunters Point Community is a core goal. The STAR Artist in Residence Program has for more than 27 years provided a studio for an 18-month period to an artist of merit from the nearby community. The grant gives the recipient the opportunity to have a full-time studio at the Shipyard, allowing the artist to concentrate on creative work and be part of the nation's largest community of fine arts professionals.

Application Guidelines and list of questions (PDF file)

Program Goals

  1. To serve as a bridge between artists with studios at the Shipyard and the nearby Bayview/Hunters Point community.

  2. To support and encourage talented and deserving artists from the nearby communities.

  3. To provide the recipient of the Artist in Residence Award a private or semi-private artist studio with an opportunity to become an integral part of the Shipyard artist community and contribute to the dialogue among other practicing artists.

Award Includes

  • A secure artist studio available to the artist 24 hours daily for the 18-month residency period.

  • Free adjacent parking, and accessible by San Francisco Muni transit.

  • Registration fees waived for the Fall Open Studios and Spring Open Studios, and a $500 stipend to offset related expenses such as the printing or mailing of artist announcements for Open Studios.

Eligibility

All visual artists who work in any medium are invited to apply if they:

  • are at least 18 years of age;

  • live, work, or are involved with the Bayview/Hunters Point community in a significant fashion; and

  • have a personal history in the community.

Artists who currently have a Shipyard studio or are enrolled in an undergraduate or advanced degree program are not eligible.

Responsibilities of the Artist Recipient

  • Comply with all safety regulations and other guidelines issued by property managers for the Shipyard studios.

  • Participate in Fall Open Studios and Spring Open Studios. Participation in other events such as the Holiday Show is optional.

  • Donate an appropriate artwork, ready for hanging or display, to the STAR Annual Auction, part of Fall Open Studios.

Other related Responsibilites and Opportunities

Formal and informal interaction with other Shipyard artists is greatly encouraged. Further community outreach and engagement with the public through educational programs held at the Shipyard or in the Bayview/Hunters Point community is appreciated.

Throughout the residency period, the artist award recipient may be asked to volunteer his/her time in support of STAR. Any informal agreement will be a result of discussions between the artist recipient and the Artist in Residence Committee and is not intended in any way to hinder or reduce the time spent in the studio.

Selection Process

The STAR Board is committed to an open and equitable selection process and will convene a Panel that may comprise a STAR Board member, a Bayview/Hunters Point Shipyard artist, or a former Artist in Residence recipient. The Panel will review the applications and make a recommendation to the STAR Board, who will make the award.

The criteria for selection include such factors as the:

  • Strength of the artwork submitted,

  • Applicant's ties to the Bayview/Hunters Point community (see "Eligibility" above),

  • Commitment of the artist to work in the studio on a regular, weekly basis, and

  • Suitability of art media for the wooden building. Safety rules prohibit work that involves an open flame or welding, creates significant amounts of dust such as sawing or sanding, uses toxic chemicals, or makes too much noise. If not sure, please email us and ask.
